Start by Believing: Supporting Survivors During Sexual Assault Awareness Month

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM), a time to raise awareness and take action to prevent sexual violence. One of the most powerful ways to support survivors is through the Start by Believing campaign—an initiative dedicated to changing the way society responds to sexual assault. At Branch House Family Justice Center, we are proud to take part in this movement, reinforcing our commitment to believing and supporting survivors from the moment they disclose their experiences.

What Is Start by Believing?

Start by Believing is a global campaign led by End Violence Against Women International (EVAWI), focused on transforming the way people respond when someone shares their story of sexual assault. Too often, survivors face skepticism, blame, or doubt when they come forward, making it less likely they will seek help or report their assault. This campaign encourages individuals and communities to respond with belief, compassion, and support—helping survivors feel heard and empowered.

Why It Matters

Survivors who are believed are more likely to seek medical care, report their assault, and begin the healing process. A supportive response can make all the difference in a survivor’s journey. When we collectively commit to believing survivors, we create a culture that holds perpetrators accountable and reduces barriers to justice.

How Branch House Is Involved

At Branch House Family Justice Center, we are dedicated to fostering a supportive and survivor-centered community. Here’s how we are participating in the Start by Believing campaign this SAAM:

  • Community Pledge – Encouraging individuals, businesses, and organizations to take the Start by Believing pledge, showing public support for survivors.

  • Social Media Advocacy – Sharing survivor-centered resources, stories, and the Start by Believing message across our digital platforms.

  • Partnering with First Responders & Advocates – Working closely with law enforcement, medical professionals, and advocates to ensure a trauma-informed response to disclosures of sexual assault.

How You Can Get Involved

  • Take the Pledge – Commit to responding with belief and support when someone shares their story.

  • Spread Awareness – Share Start by Believing messages on social media to encourage others to do the same.

  • Educate Yourself & Others – Learn about the realities of sexual violence and how to provide a compassionate response.

  • Support Local Efforts – Attend local SAAM events, volunteer, or donate to organizations that assist survivors.

Together, We Can Make a Difference

Changing the way we respond to sexual assault starts with each of us. By taking the Start by Believing pledge and spreading awareness, we can help create a world where survivors feel safe to speak out, receive the support they deserve, and begin their healing journey without fear of judgment.

Join us this April in recognizing Sexual Assault Awareness Month and committing to a future where every survivor is met with belief, compassion, and justice. At Branch House, we believe you.
